Moodboard From Keyword: Romantic

I've always loved arty things, until you put give me the words: Moodboard. I find them really difficult because I like structure but I also love chaotic things.

So I'm in Sharon's lesson and she pulls out the dictionary and tells us that we're going to flick through the dictionary and randomly stop and put our finger on the page and that word will be the inspiration for our Moodboard.

CCTV, Present, Mock and then it comes to me and I get Romantic. I start to laugh because I'm one of the most cynical people you'll ever meet. (Not bitter, just cynical! There is a difference)

I start by brainstorming 'Romantic' :

I feel pretty confident and that I've covered all of the bases that I need to make a start on my moodboard and so the magazine carnage begins. I'm pulling pages out and cutting stuff up left, right and center.

I take over a table and grab the red and pink crepe paper and lay it out like a flower shape. I place all my images down, keeping them next to what they are related too. There's a few photos of what I thought my masterpiece was:

I felt so confident! I was even doing a little dance like "Boom I nailed something finally"

How wrong was I. Sharon came over and did a few signature head tilts and I braced for impact.

"Why is there red?"
"Why is there pink?"
"What is the need for that texture?"

I felt like a school child and my volcano experiment hadn't gone well. Sharon just started to have a friendly chat with me about what my word was and in a completely exasperated fashion I grabbed the magazine and hid behind it while wailing:

"Romance is dead and I don't believe in it anyway"

Sharon pulled the magazine away from my face and was smiling.

"Well, that's your new board. Let's get started"

We stripped out all of the colour. It wasn't needed. All of the smaller images got taken out because Sharon said they were getting lost in the overall image. Smaller images that you have to take a while to look at mean they take away the effect that you're supposed to deliver with a moodboard.

I kept the photos that had the lighting in them that I liked. I started to look for the images that had a more sexual relationship, or just indicated my initial thought of romance being dead.

We got rid of the flowers too because you know, nobody does that anymore unless they are apology flowers.

So I came up with this bad boy. I feel really pleased with it after Sharon's new feedback.

Sharon said she really liked the images I had chosen and that it was an easy to read Moodboard now. She then told me I needed to find images that made me think about the hair and make up that I would chose for this pitch. After hunting through all the glossies at super human speed I found two photosoots that had what I wanted to convey in my board. I had even found a make up colour scheme that I had shown in my first moodboard but they were photos from a beauty magazine. This meant they were really small and didn't stand out and it was the most important part of the board.

Here is my final board, I've adjusted the contrast so it looks more like it did. My phone is rubbish.
